The panel that nominates state supreme court justices for appointment by the governor tentatively set April 12 as the date to interview applicants for the most recent opening.

Justice Ricky Polston, 67, who has been on the court since 2008, announced his resignation effective next Friday.

The Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission, which met via Zoom Thursday night, decided on the April interview date pending the availability of one commissioner, Vice Chair Jesse Panuccio, who had a scheduling conflict.

Applications for the opening are still due April 3, Chair Fred Karlinsky said.

According to a letter sent by his office, Gov. Ron DeSantis asked the commission to recommend no less than six names by April 21 – less than a month away.

DeSantis also asked for nominees who live within the boundaries of the newly established Sixth District Court of Appeal, which includes Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Lee, Orange, Osceola and Polk counties.
