First Up: Metromover on the move in Miami-Dade

From the daily "First Read" email.

In a major development in Miami-Dade public transportation, the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works this past week received the first fully upgraded Metromover vehicle, part of the Metromover Upgrade Project. Once completed, DTPW’s system-wide upgrade will allow Metromover to move more riders in less time while making the system safer and more reliable, officials said.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and other leaders attended an event where a fully retrofitted car was hoisted onto the track near the School Board Metromover station. The upgraded car will be used as a prototype to retrofit 26 other vehicles at DTPW’s maintenance facility.

“Miami-Dade is making historic investments in infrastructure across the county, including throughout our transit system,” Cava said. “We’ve made repairs, improvements, and strengthened service on the Metromover system, but we’re excited to begin the systemwide upgrade our residents deserve, and it starts with this car.”

She added, “Along with safe neighborhoods, quality housing, and good jobs, everyone deserves a reliable transportation network that connects them to opportunity. With this project, we’re building a more future ready system that’s both resilient and reliable for residents and visitors alike.”
